学校英語では文法や読解、会話などはやりますが、コロンやセミコロンの使い方、ましてやカッコや記号のことまでは教えてもらえません。
たとえば "―"なんて、「横棒」とでも読みそうですが、実は「エムダッシュ em dash」という名前もあるのです。

今回ははっきりした「ハテナ起点」の記載は見あたりません。

では、早速抄録を読んでいきましょう。

BACKGROUND

Corneal renewal and repair are mediated by stem cells of the limbus, the narrow zone between the cornea and the bulbar conjunctiva. (N Engl J Med 2010;363:147-55.)

"limbus"という単語に馴染みがなくても大丈夫。","のあとに説明が加えられています。

METHODS

Clinical results were assessed by means of Kaplan–Meier, Kruskal–Wallis, and univariate and multivariate logistic-regression analyses. (N Engl J Med 2010;363:147-55.)

下線部はいずれも統計手法の名前ですが、よーくみると、ここの横棒は「ハイフン」ではなく「エヌダッシュ（エムダッシュの小文字）」になっています。今まで気がつかず、ハイフンをつかってました...

ちなみに　ハイフンは　-
そしてエヌダッシュは　–　となります。微妙な長さの差、わかりますか？

RESULTS

In post hoc analyses, success ― that is, the generation of normal epithelium on donor stroma ― was associated with the percentage of p63-bright holoclone-forming stem cells in culture. (N Engl J Med 2010;363:147-55.)

ここに出てくる横棒が「エムダッシュ em dash」です。
速引!医学語ブック (シンシア・L・クライダー著、東京図書）では次のように解説されています。

em dash （全角ダッシュ、エムダッシュ）というのは句読点の一種である。思考がちょっと停止したことを示すために、文章中に入れて使う。説明を加えてもっと内容をはっきりさせたり、内容を強調させたりしたい場合につける、文章中の注釈みたいなものと考えるとよい。

The Chicago Manual of Styleでのエムダッシュについての説明を抜粋します。

6.88 Amplifying or explaining.
6.89 Separating subject from pronoun.
6.90 Indicating sudden breaks.
6.91 Used in place of, or with, a comma.
6.92 With other punctuation.
6.93 Used instead of quotation marks.
6.94 In an index.

この抄録での使い方は、上記の6.88に該当しますね。
